That is such a good point. Belgium has compulsory voting and, I think, some parts of Australia. Would be interesting to look at turnout etc and examine if democracy is demonstrably more vibrant.
For democracy to thrive participation needs to be as widespread as possible. Too many people appear to take their lives in the liberal democracies for granted and something that will always be underwritten by "someone else".
There is a complacency about democracy persisting in the West, that's for sure. Now and in the past, as Sinclair Lewis's 1935 novel, It Can't Happen Here, outlined. The story follows American politician Buzz Windrip, who becomes the first dictator of the United States.

Given the usually rather low voter turnout in countries like the UK and Ireland one would have to wonder if voting oughtn't to be made mandatory?
